Director · Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia

Mary Callaghan (1955–2016) was an Australian filmmaker, writer and director who grew up in Wollongong, New South Wales. She studied filmmaking at Swinburne in Melbourne, where she became involved in the feminist film movement, contributing to the 1975 International Women's Film Festival and Lip, a feminist visual arts magazine.

After returning to Wollongong in the late 1970s, Callaghan wrote and directed the acclaimed docudrama Greetings from Wollongong (1982), which explored unemployment and working-class life in the industrial city. The film featured non-professional actors and was developed with the support of her brother, artist and printmaker Michael Callaghan (1953–2011), a founding figure of Redback Graphix. It screened at the Melbourne and Sydney film festivals and received critical acclaim. Callaghan went on to write and direct her first feature film, Tender Hooks (1989).
